RE: 'Walk' fuer die Ueberschwemmungsopfer in den Philippinen
Keep it coming
Tonnes of desperately-needed supplies have been delivered to flood-ravaged communities in the Philippines, but the United Nations has warned that much more is needed. Elisabeth Byrs, from the UN’s humanitarian coordination office (OCHA), has said $74 million in emergency aid is still required for the one million-plus people hit by the devastating floods. Relief agencies reported that flood victims were wading through neck-high water to collect emergency food rations, with more torrential rain forecast as typhoon Parma lingered off the coast of the Philippines. More than 4,000 homes were destroyed by the combined blow from Typhoon Parma over the weekend and by tropical storm Ketsana on September 26, Byrs said. UN agencies have warned of the threat of waterborne diseases, such as cholera, posed by the disaster. Meanwhile, support continues to arrive into the country from the United Arab Emirates. Representatives from several charities, including the UAE Red Crescent Authority and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Foundation have met to discuss how best to co-ordinate aid. And Marc Sauvagnac of Medecins Sans Frontieres in the UAE, said it had 20 tonnes of non-food items - including tents - ready to be dispatched from the UAE to help displaced people. He said the charity has also set up two mobile clinics in the flood-affected areas. Meanwhile, thousands of people are expected to take part in a charity walk in Dubai on Friday to raise cash for typhoon victims. The UAE Red Crescent and the Philippines Consulate in Dubai are organising the event, which starts at 7am in Safa Park. Each walker is asked to donate dhs50 to take part. “When a part of the world is affected by such a disaster, the rest of it also feels its pain,” said Philippine Consul General, Benito Valeriano Gruss Lennox |
